Forklift Battery

What is forklift battery

Forklift batteries are used as DC power sources for forklifts, tractor-trailers, handling trucks, industrial underground mining locomotives, and other equipment, and are widely used in large-scale logistics centers, airports, stations, ports, large-scale enterprises, factories, and industrial and mining warehouses. lithium-ion forklift battery refers to the battery to carries out the operation of the forklift special battery. That is, this kind of battery is installed inside the electric battery of the electric forklift. In the battery forklift, the battery tractor used in the power supply is basically a power-type battery. Power type battery is also known as traction forklift battery, its working principle is basically the same as the starter battery. Generally speaking, a complete lithium traction batteries system usually consists of battery cells, a battery management system (BMS), a Pack system (including functional components), a wiring harness, structural parts, and other related components. The power lithium battery system mode can be divided into three different levels of modes, namely battery mode, battery management system mode, and Pack system integration mode.

How to choose the right forklift battery

Nowadays, the vast majority of forklifts are battery-powered. Durable and high-capacity lithium-ion battery forklifts can even be used in a variety of demanding applications. How an enterprise chooses the right forklift and forklift lithium battery for its business operations is directly related to its operational efficiency. Forklift batteries account for a significant portion of a forklift’s cost and are a critical investment. The right electric forklift battery will give you the longevity and reliable performance you need to keep your operation running smoothly. Choosing industrial forklift batteries can be complicated – there are so many choices that it’s hard to decide which factors are most important: AH capacity, chemistry, charging speed, cycle life, brand, price, etc. The performance of the battery must be appropriate for the actual use of the forklift or forklift truck. Sometimes the same trucks are used in different ways in the same facility (e.g., handling different loads). In this case, you may need to use different batteries for them. Your company’s purchasing policies and standards may also be at play.

Forklift traction battery voltage (V) and capacity (Ah)

There are plenty of standard voltage options (24V, 36V, 48V, 72V, 80V) and different capacity options (from 100Ah to 690Ah and higher) available for a wide range of forklift models.

For example, the 24V 200Ah forklift battery is typically used in 4,000-pound pallet trucks, while the 80-volt 535Ah forklift battery is suitable for counterbalanced sit-down forklifts to handle loads up to 20K pounds.

Battery compartment size, weight and counterweight

The size of the forklift battery compartment is often unique, therefore finding a perfect and precise fit is critical. It is also important to consider the cable connector type and its location on the battery and truck. OEM manufacturer, QH series lithium batteries are a good illustration of how batteries are designed to meet the unique specifications of a particular piece of equipment.
Different forklift models have different recommended battery weight requirements that you should consider when making a selection. An additional counterweight is added to the battery for heavy-duty applications.

Load weight, lifting height and travel distance

The heavier the load, the higher the lift, and the longer the route, the more battery capacity you need to last all day. Consider the average and maximum weight of the load, distance traveled, lift height, and ramps. The most demanding applications such as paper and packaging or food and beverage with load weights up to 15-20,000 pounds will require an 80V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of up to 1050Ah.

Charging Speed application scenarios: Lithium-ion battery vs. Lead-acid battery

Single-motive battery operation eliminates the need to replace a dead battery with a new one during the workday. In most cases, this is only possible when there is an opportunity to recharge the lithium-ion forklift battery during a break, which is convenient for the operator and does not interrupt the production process. A few 15-minute breaks during the day are enough to keep the lithium-ion forklift battery more than 40% charged. This is a recommended charging pattern that provides optimal performance for the forklift and helps extend the life of the forklift battery.

li-ion battery forklifts are the safest choice for industrial forklifts. A wider range of application scenarios, this is without any of the problems of lead-acid technology, such as corrosion and sulfation, and does not emit any pollutants. They eliminate the risk of accidents associated with the daily replacement of heavy-duty batteries. This advantage is crucial in industries such as food and beverage, medical supplies, and electronics.

Lithium-ion Forklift Batteries in Different Types of Electric Forklift Trucks (Type I, II and III)

Lithium-ion batteries are best suited for Type I, II, and III forklifts and other off-road electric vehicles such as sweepers and scrubbers, boat trailers, golf carts, and so on. What are the reasons? Lead-acid technology offers three times longer service life, excellent safety, minimal maintenance, stable operation at low or high temperatures, and high energy capacity in kWh.

Both LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) and NMC (Lithium-Manganese-Cobalt-Oxide) batteries are used in electric forklift trucks, and recent testing of lithium battery types by Sandia Laboratories has shown that LFP batteries actually last longer and are more reliable than NMC batteries.

Lead-acid batteries are widely used in all types of electric forklifts, and the TPPL is the newest version of these batteries. It offers higher efficiency and faster charging speed, but only compared to traditional liquid-rich lead-acid technology or sealed lead-acid batteries such as Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM). Lithium-ion forklift batteries are more economical than lead batteries.

In most cases, lithium-ion batteries for forklifts are a more economical and efficient choice for industrial applications than any lead-acid battery, including AGM or TPPL batteries.

Forklift Battery Communication

The Controller Area Network (CAN bus) allows microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other’s applications without a host computer. Not all battery brands are fully integrated with all forklift models via the CAN bus. You can then choose to use an external battery discharge indicator (BDI), which provides the operator with visual and audio signals of the battery’s charging status and readiness for work.

For QH Lithium Traction batteries, we offer both options and are ready to develop a CAN option for any forklift make and model.

Fleet Management Requirements Data and Battery Maintenance and Battery Life

Fleet management data is primarily used to track maintenance, improve safety compliance, and maximize equipment utilization. Battery management system (BMS) data can significantly enrich or replace data from other sources, including details on power consumption, time of charge and idle events, battery technical parameters, and more.

Lithium-ion batteries do not require routine maintenance. Lead-acid batteries need to be regularly added with water, occasionally cleaned after acid leakage, and regularly balanced (using a special charging mode to balance the battery). As lead-acid generators age, labor and external service costs tend to increase, resulting in reduced uptime and resulting in ever-increasing operating costs. Lithium batteries last longer than any lead-acid battery pack. Lead-acid battery life is 1000-1500 cycles or less. Lithium-ion batteries can last at least 3,000 cycles, depending on the application.

TPPL lead-acid batteries last longer than traditional liquid-filled or sealed AGM batteries, but they don’t even come close to lithium-ion technology in this regard.

In lithium batteries, LFP batteries exhibit a longer cycle life than NMC.

Product quality and sales support services

Product quality is primarily determined by the degree to which the battery meets operational requirements. Correct capacity, cables, charging speed settings, weather protection, and protection from improper handling by inexperienced forklift operators – all of these determine the quality of battery performance in the field.
